Many people do not feel comfortable dating outside of their faith, if only because they cannot fathom themselves marrying a person of a different religion. To them, the purpose of dating is not merely to go out for dinner, drinks and a movie, but to determine whether or not somebody is a potential candidate for matrimony. Dating, then, becomes something much more serious and important than what today's social mores might otherwise indicate.

They may have a point. It is true that interfaith marriages end up in divorce court more often than marriages between two members of the same church. Once married, religious differences can become insurmountable, particularly where the raising of children is involved. In Judaism, for example, it is held that a child born to a Jewish mother is, in fact, Jewish. This leads to familial pressures that can act as a wedge between two people who otherwise may be very much in love.

There is no shortage of online dating services that cater to just about every faith out there, so people looking to date exclusively within their religion have plenty of places to go. Churches, temples and synagogues also cater to interested singles who would like to avoid the standard dating scene. Such arrangements put so many of the awkward questions to rest without ever having to answer them in the first place.

Seeing only those with whom you share your faith may seem like a rather narrow approach to dating, but it could lead to divine happiness, especially among devoutly religious people for whom faith is the paramount consideration. Faith-based dating sheds new light on the expression, "To each their own." As an outside observer, all you can say is, God bless 'em.
